I wonder why the 'not good enough' aspect of moderation has been applied to the audio and art portals, but not the flash portal?
I mean, yeah, there's a judgement filter, but it's largely run by moron kids who'll 5 any old shite as long as it's got hentai and/or half-assed graphics. Why don't we have mods (or any group of people who can tell a decent flash from a pathetic attempt at grabbing votes from dumbshits) deciding what should be in the portal?
The portal is the bread and butter of newgrounds. More submissions go into it than any other part of the site. To leave the content up to a small oligarchy would be suicide for the future of the site. Disincluding the general users would suddenly turn NG away from "Everything by everyone" to "Everything censored by a few" and would make it no better than any other flash site.
True it would cut down and the crap coming in, but the difference is that the current system while it has a few leaks, does in fact keep a bulk of the crap out. A few people have discovered a way to pass bad flash, but that is what adds to the charm of the portal really. Its the most free of the portals and the least restricted because creating a flash with just stickmen fighting still takes more effort and time than drawing one in MS paint, which is what the art portal would flood with without the scouting system. Also the idea behind the scouting system is to keep bad stuff out of the portal, but still allow the users to put any legit art piece on their user pages. So just because its not in the portal doesnt mean they cant have their images on the site. The B/P system forces people to strive to reach at least some level of skill in order to get a flash passed.
There are also those who argue that alot of the spam flash is actually good, and in a way it is. It is its own avant-garde movement that adds to the wide vareity of the largest and first flash collection on the internet.

Well i have to admit..this is pretty in depth. For all the others reading this!! You only have 20 spaces for art if you are unscouted!! Trust me i know...But other than that this is all good advice!

My friend Bullsik, an illustrator, created an account on ng. He submitted his artwork (very decent one I must say). Yet it didn't appear on the art portal so far. I clicked "recommend this user" to help him. As I understand, he has to be "scouted". Does it mean he has to wait to be "discovered" by a renown ng artist? Will someone of the ng crew do that? Should he request artists via PM to scout him or post such a request on the forum? How else can I help him?
Im sure he has been sent scout invites, ask him to check his inbox for the confirmations. He should not PM anyone asking for a scout, nor should he post anywhere asking for a scout.

Informative, I didn't know you needed to have four marked as public to be eligible for scouting. If you ever have the time would you be wiling to take a look at what I've submitted and let me know what you think I should have marked as public, if any. Just looking for opinions since I'm still fairly new here.

I'll just assume that everything I have marked as public is good enough since you didn't say otherwise. I'm not as concerned about getting scouted as I am about having stuff marked as public that isn't good enough if I am scouted. From what I've seen in the art portal it's kind of hard to judge the level of quality that is expected.
Just keep making stuff, if the bulk of your pieces are good enough you have nothing to worry about, we mods can unmark the ones that aren't up to snuff and you can keep your scout.
